THE VILLAINS OUT TO TELL REAL LIFE STORIES ON ROCKING DEBUT

» jdaris 02/28/10 14:05:48  » Gigante Media » comments: 0

Atlanta, GA—Many bands today try and come up with a gimmick or crazy angle to sell their music and to make themselves apparent to the masses.  Atlanta rock band The Villains, however, has what might be classified as a novel approach, and that is simply to make great music—music that will remind you of a time when FM radio play helped break bands and arena tours helped to develop those acts.  You may have heard this all before, but you surely haven’t heard a band having as much fun making great music as The Villains in a long time.

The eight tracks on The Villains’ debut, out now, is a look into the eyes and hearts of a band with real life stories to tell.  From the breezy optimism of lead single “Let’s Forget About It Tonight” (currently charting in the top 100 at AAA non-com radio) to the reflective musings of a band on the road in “Going Deaf For A Living,” The Villains weave a seamless backdrop of rock, pop and country that speaks to the soul, and is fun and reflective as well.

The six members (Magno, Dan Call, Sean McNally, Michael Wilkes, Jimmy James Schmitt, and Alan Schaefer) have a rich history of writing, recording, and touring.  Each of them has recorded and performed with many mainstream and indie artists from Nashville to New York, as well as touring the world together and individually.  And what started as a recording project for Magno, Dan, Sean, and Mike after three years on the road with Nashville recording artist Keni Thomas (opening for the likes of Dwight Yoakum, Montgomery Gentry, and Trace Atkins) quickly turned into this debut album. The idea was to bring in two more friends and co-writers, Jimmy and Alan, to round out the band—and in the spirit of classic acts such as The Band, The Eagles, Wings, Atlanta Rhythm Section and Fleetwood Mac, this blend of different singers and styles solidified the sound rather than compromising it.  The Villains were born.

In addition, three of the songs on The Villains’ debut were written with guitarist Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow, Don Henley) and features Stroud on guitar as well. The album was recorded by Chris Griffin (Live, Drivin N Cryin) and mixed by Chris and Russ Fowler (Stone Temple Pilots, Offspring) at Griffin Mastering Studios in Atlanta.

The Villains hope you’ll kick back, have a beer, and enjoy their rocking debut. The experience was a true labor of love between friends and they look forward to coming to your town and sharing it with you.

Recent Reviews:

“Delivering eight tracks worth of supremely catchy, tuneful, and delightful country pop-rock winners, this Atlanta, Georgia group keep things constantly fun and frothy on their hugely enjoyable and impressive debut album.”—Jersey Beat

“The Villains would have fit in well in the '70s. While opening track, "Let's Forget About it Tonight," rocks in a southern-fried, .38 Special kind of way, the rest of the CD settled into a sort of peaceful easy feeling. It's Jimmy Buffet in his more somber moments.”—Atlanta Music Guide

“The style on most of the tracks on "The Villains" mixes a distinct Americana vibe with an easily accessible pop sound. The result is a collection of songs that, while they might stay a bit on the safer side of things, will definitely stick with the listener long after the CD has stopped playing.”—Charleston Post Courier

unreleased recordings of Hank Williams

Fairfax, VA (October 8, 2009) --- A new set of previously unreleased recordings that Hank Williams made for the Mother's Best radio show in 1951 will be issued as a 3-CD box set called Revealed: Unreleased Recordings on Hank Williams November 3rd via Time Life.  In addition to 50 tracks not heard since they originally aired, the collection includes extremely rare in-studio conversations with Williams, and each disc contains a complete show exactly as it was heard over fifty years ago.  Of particular importance is "Cold, Cold, Heart" captured on one of the program's earliest surviving shows, making it the first public performance ever of the song.

The recordings offer new and profound insight into William's life and music, revealing a personality that had never been previously seen or heard anywhere else. It showcases his humor as he jokes with his band and the emcee, his love of music as he talks unguardedly about his favorite songs, and captures him in his prime.  Newsweek magazine noted poignantly that upon first listening to the tapes of Williams' in-studio banter, it marked the first time his lost daughter Jett heard her father laugh.  "To me, this is even more exciting than the first set because you get to hear my daddy talk and you get a sense of him, not just as an entertainer, but as a person," says Jett Williams.  "That's why we called it REVEALED. The song selection is as strong as the first volume, but this time we've done three thematic CD's."

Revealed follows Unreleased Recordings, a 3-CD box set issued by Time Life last year to universal critical acclaim and strong sales.  The Los Angeles Times raved, "...remarkable...although many boxed sets are so filled with hits and misses that they deserve to be called little more than record industry "product," this set is so rich and revealing it deserves to be labeled 'historic.'"  Uncut gave the collection five stars, declaring, "...it's a supreme showcase for his many talents: the poetic simplicity of his songwriting, the vocal inflections that came to embody the language of country music itself...the hurt and soul that imbued everything he sang with an alarming rawness."  And the New York Times simply stated, "Truly one of the best records ever."

At the peak of his career in 1951, Hank Williams recorded 143 songs on radio shows sponsored by the Mother's Best flour company.  Hank sang with his regular road band and taped his hits as well as songs he never recorded anywhere else. It is a rare, informal glimpse into the heart and soul of country music's greatest star who passed away on New Year's Day 1953, at age 29.  The performances were recorded on acetate discs (meant to be played only once or twice) that were shelved in 1951 and gradually faded from common memory. In the 1970s the acetates were saved from the trash by a WSM employee and eventually given to Hank's daughter, Jett, who was born after Hank died and did not know he was her father until many years later. On behalf of the estate, Jett fought an eight-year battle to establish ownership, finally winning the right to release these recordings.

Since his death in 1953, Williams has risen in popularity to become one of most iconic figures in all of American music.  Such classics as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Jambalaya," "You Win Again," keep his legacy alive and these Mother's Best recordings have been eagerly awaited by fans around the world.  The 143 recordings will be released as installments over a three year period. When the Time Life series is complete it will increase the number of known Williams' recordings by fifty percent.

BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - DUETS

Featuring Collaborations With Ben Harper, Randy Travis, Bonnie Raitt and More, Including Previously Unreleased Recordings with Lou Reed, John Hammond, and Toots Hibbert.Blind Boys of Alabama On Saguaro Road RecordsFirst Single, "Perfect Peace," With Toots Hibbert

Fairfax, VA  --- As the Blind Boys of Alabama  head into their seventh decade of belting out impeccable harmonies it's only fitting for Duets, a special anthology featuring 14 unique collaborations, includes classics from other artists' Grammy-winning CDs plus four brand new tracks. Unlike some of their old-time gospel music brethren, the Blind Boys eagerly embrace the secular music world, bringing gospel music to mainstream audiences.  As a result the group has formed fast friendships with an impressive array of musicians...

... - venerable colleagues and youthful protégés alike - who span a wealth of genres.  Many artists have asked the Blind Boys to guest on their projects and their new release documents these rich, eclectic and cohesive interactions.  Duets ranges from rock to reggae, country to contemporary Christian, and blues to ballads, all unified by the Blind Boys' deep, soulful harmonizing.

Three previously unreleased songs, including recordings with Lou Reed, John Hammond and Toots Hibbert, are featured as well as a new song with Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles which will be simultaneously released on his forthcoming CD. Also included are a number of tracks that have long been out of print.  Of the ten previously-released tracks on Duets, seven have appeared on Grammy-nominated or Grammy-winning albums.

The first single off of Duets, "Perfect Peace,"  is now available on itunes and features Jamaican reggae legend Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals.  Said Toots, "I grew up musically in the church and it was great working with the Blind Boys and capturing the spiritual vibe I love."  The album also includes performances with Ben Harper, Randy Travis, Bonnie Raitt, Solomon Burke, Susan Tedeschi, Jars of Clay, Charlie Musselwhite, Dan Zanes, and a live track from the Blind Boys' Live In New Orleans  DVD with Marva Wright.  The diverse group of artists that make up Duets reflects the expansive appeal of the group as well as the sweeping reverence for their talent.

The Blind Boys of Alabama are recognized worldwide as living legends of gospel music. Celebrated by both the Grammys and The National Endowment for the Arts with Lifetime Achievement Awards, inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and winners of five Grammy® Awards, they have attained the highest levels of recognition in a career that spans over 60 years and shows no signs of diminishing. Longevity and major awards aside, The Blind Boys have earned praise for their remarkable interpretations of

everything from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material by

acclaimed songwriters such as Curtis Mayfield, Prince and Tom Waits. Their performances have been experienced by millions on "The Tonight Show," "Late Night with David Letterman," the Grammy® Awards telecast, "60 Minutes," and on their own holiday PBS Special. The Blind Boys' live shows are roof- raising musical events that appeal to audiences of all cultures, as evidenced by an international itinerary that has taken them to almost every continent.  In 2007, they released the Grammy winning album, Down in New Orleans, their first for Saguaro Road Records, which was followed in 2008 by a companion DVD, Live in New Orleans.

Despite the global recession, revenues from streamed mobile music services and full-track downloads are expected to exhibit strong growth over the next 5 years, according to a new report from Juniper Research. http://encore.celebrityaccess.com//images/article/31068articleimage2.jpgCombined revenues from these services are expected to more than double from $2.5 billion in 2009 to nearly $5.5 billion in 2013.

The report, however, found that those music services launched using an ad-funded model face a potential shortfall of as much as 50% to reductions in ad budgets. "...we’re now seeing a surge in the adoption of more sophisticated offerings. Recent positive developments, such as Apple announcing that iPhone customers can use the 3G network to download full-tracks, will offer a further stimulus to growth...."

"....According to Azoff, the declines in the CD sales have been particularly alarming, most notably in regards to back catalog sales. "Recorded music, which used to be the biggest revenue source, is down to less than 6% [of total revenue for major artists]." Recorded music, Azoff noted, has become more of a marketing tool for live touring than a the primary product...."

"...Azoff also talked about the changing dynamic of the music industry, describing it as a "demonetization" of the business. Azoff, also a manager for acts such as The Eagles and Christine Aguilera, described artists walking into his office, "who used to make $300,000 to $500,000 a year in royalties [via recorded music]. And now that’s diminished to less than $50,000" .....

House Of Blues in Anaheim, CA   Showtime 8pm - Songs From New CD Included In new David Mamet Movie 'Redbelt'

(Los Angeles, CA) Singer/songwriter Rebecca Pidgeon will open for singer Aimee Mann on June 6th at the House Of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The
evening will consist of a special acoustic-styled set with regular players, gutarist Willie Aaron (Peter Himmelman)
and drummer Debra Dobkin (Shawn
Colvin) For Pidgeon, whose new album Behind The Velvet Curtain pulls
back the screen on her alluring vocal style and absorbing songwriting
talent, such a coveted live showcase couldn't come at a better time.
Drawing raves for her fifth studio album, produced by 2008 Grammy
winner
Larry Klein (Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters), the provocative
artist is beginning to be recognized for her music in the same glowing
terms
as she is for her much lauded acting career, (she appears in many of
writer/director David Mamet's film, including Redbelt, and acclaimed roles in
Heist, The Winslow Boy, and others)

An essential contributor to the authentic motifs that round out
Redbelt's enigmatic sound, Rebecca shines on every track on the new CD,
deftly
weaving between styles. There's the intrigue of "Long Island Poem," a song crafted from a strained dinner encounter; the Bossa Nova
slink of
"Dawn," which she boldly reprises in fluent Portuguese at the end of
the album, (titled "Manha)," thanks to a translation by singer Luciana Souza,
who
also appears with Rebecca on the Brazilian-tinged duet "When You Were
Mine." In between, the singer/actress trades on the softer currents of
a voice
that manages to sound as confident as it is caressing, including a
wistful cover of the Beach Boys classic "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and two
songs
co-written by playwright/film director (and Rebecca's husband) David
Mamet.

After releasing an impressive string of albums in the mid-90s,
including the acclaimed New York Girls' Club and Four Marys, Rebecca
and Klein
connected in 2002 to begin the rough sketches for Tough On Crime, which
was also produced by Larry Klein and released in 2005.

Most recently, another song penned by Pidgeon and Mamet, "Army Brat,"
has been embraced by several military spouse bloggers. A homemade
video
for the song, shot in Rebecca's backyard and shot by Mamet, was
featured on the online milspouse destination militarywives.com and armywives.com.

EDWIN MCCAIN RECORDS - AN ALBUM OF SOUL-PLEASING CLASSICS

Nobody's Fault But Mine
In Stores June 24
On New
Saguaro Road Records

Fairfax, VA --- In the midst of a career filled with self-penned hits and time tested songs, singer/songwriter Edwin McCain recently took a rare break to record an album of vintage R&B and classic southern soul songs. Nobody's Fault But Mine is due out June 24th on Saguaro Road Records. Saguaro Road is a new label launched by Direct Holdings Americas Inc. Direct Holdings also markets and sells audio and video entertainment products under the Time Life trademark, which it uses under license from Time Warner Inc.Direct Holdings Executive Vice President Mike Jason said, "Saguaro Road is dedicated to presenting newly recorded American roots music and when we heard Edwin's song choices, we knew we had both the right artist and the right creative fit."

In what he calls an opportunity of a lifetime, Edwin reveled in the experience of recording songs originated by someone other than himself. "For me it was an absolute blast, completely liberating to be playing, singing and interpreting other peoples' songs just purely for the joy of doing it," McCain explains. "It was amazing to return to that era and mindset and to really understand the beauty and absolute brilliance of the music."

All the songs were handpicked for the album, with McCain listening to hundreds of tracks before selecting ones that he was especially drawn to. "I wanted people to listen to this album in their car, and no matter what they're driving, feel like they're in a 1966 Cadillac convertible heading down a two lane road between Greenville and Augusta with the AM radio on, the top down and the wind blowing through their hair."

Nobody's Fault But Mine was recorded in the spirit of a live album, an homage to the way the songs were originally performed with little studio overdubbing, retakes and other technological patchwork. "We just kind of kept in that sprit of 'let's do it live,'" explains Edwin, "to make it vibrant, just like a live record, not go back and fix stuff and overthink it - it actually adds to the charm."

Edwin McCain remains one of the most prolific touring artists in the US and is also known for his hits "I'll Be," "I Could Not Ask For More," "Solitude" and "Hearts Fall."

NEW CD FROM THE REDS

» THE REDS 03/21/08 15:44:57 » comments: 0

NEW CD FROM THE REDS “Fugitives From The Laughing House,” is The Reds brand new CD, featuring founding members, Rick Shaffer and Bruce Cohen. “Fugitives From The Laughing House” is a neo sixties / post punk world of buzzing drones, three dimensional sounds, stinging guitars, raw emotion……a soundscape that hits the listeners consciousness……while lyrically taking on deep matters of the soul.

The Reds have not strayed from their roots on this album. The passion, aggressive drive and angular electronic textures in previous albums and film work, best represented in “The Reds” (A&M), “Shake Appeal” (Sire/WB), and “Cry Tomorrow” (Tarock), along with their work for director, Michael Mann, in the film Manhunter.

“Fugitives From The Laughing House” contains the propelling, ringing and slashing guitars of Rick Shaffer, along with the spatial, crazed keyboards of Bruce Cohen, with the added Dub style deep bass and relentless drum groove, combined with Shaffer’s vocals….. to create a sound like death on a holiday.

Written and produced by The Reds, the ride starts from the street fighting Wild and Little Cisco, through the hypnotic stroll of Ringing The Bell and Dum Dum Dice……and does not let up until the end with the grinding Dub laced Gunn’s Suicide . . . . and slow death burn of Can’t Bring You Back Again, that feels like a dying man’s last breath.

“Fugitives From The Laughing House” is a straight forward raw nerve reflection of life in America today. These guys would not be out of place on a smoky midnight bill in the 60’s with The Doors and The Velvet Underground......or in 2007 at Bonnarroo……they have a timeless sound.

Cookie cutter music on the radio..

Got together in 2006 because we were so tired of all the overproduced cookie cutter music on the radio today. Sounding like a mix of old-timey mountain music, Hot Tuna, The Flying Burrito Brothers, even a little like the Holy Modal Rounders (less the druggy Humour).

Cafe Latino can proudly ....

Cafe Latino can proudly ....

If there's some unspoken rule about radio hosts playing their own music, local composer and singer Amanda Martinez should feel free to break it. The popular voice of JAZZ.FM91's Café Latino can proudly drop the needle on her own sultry record, Sola, which scorches with hot Cuban rhythms and bossa-tinged jazzy numbers like Guajira Sola and Diciembre.

Kevin Laliberte does some nice flamenco guitar work on the traditional composition La Llorona, where Martinez's voice writhes with the affecting pain of a mourning mother. Even anglo unilinguals will dig the sensual words mostly sung in Spanish (and Portuguese), because anything this soulfully delivered supersedes language barriers.

-----------------------------------
